Heat Pump Grants Scotland

We help people in Scotland get free grants & funding for air-source heat pumps.

Heat Pump Grants Scotland

Grants for free heat pumps in Scotland are available through the Government-backed Energy Company Obligation (ECO4) scheme. Other funds & grants are also available for people not eligible for ECO4.

Why is this? Grants for heat pumps have been introduced to help homeowners & private tenants in rural areas move away from inefficient heating, such as oil, LPG, solid fuels (inc. coal, open fires) & even electric heating. Not only does this reduce carbon emissions, but it will also reduce the cost of heating. See our FAQs for info on the eligibility rules.

The new ECO4 scheme has made grants available until 2026 for eligible households to carry out energy-saving improvements, such as fitting heat pumps, solar panels & insulation.

How do we help? By providing a free service to Scottish homeowners & private tenants, helping them obtain free grants and/or funding for heat pumps. To date, we have obtained home improvement grants of more than £3m for our Scottish customers!

There are various options for funding heat pumps – free grants, interest-free loans & a combination of grant + loan. Our team can help you establish the most economical way of getting a heat pump installed.

Please get in touch to ask any questions. Even better, just fill in a few details to check your eligibility & we will call you back.

Why Get A Free Heat Heat Pump?

Having a heat pump installed makes sense on a number of levels.

Lower Heating Costs

Air source heat pumps can significantly reduce heating costs.  They offer a more stable and potentially cheaper source of heating compared to fossil fuels, such as oil or electric heating.

Energy Efficiency

Air source heat pumps are highly energy-efficient and can provide an eco-friendly alternative to traditional heating systems i.e. thy reduce carbon emissions (along with heating costs).

Government Incentives

In Scotland, there are various government incentives and grants available. These incentives can make the switch to a heat pump free (or certainly more affordable).

Improved Property Value

Installing an air source heat pump can increase the value of your home. As energy efficiency becomes more important, a home with a heat pump could lead to a higher valuation.

Can I get a free grant for heat pumps in Scotland?

Yes – free heat pump grants are available for eligible Scottish homes until 2026.

The Scottish Government is moving towards a more holistic approach to improving a home’s energy efficiency (rather than subsidising single upgrades). For example, free heat pumps are only available when a minimum standard of insulation exists. The good news is that free grants are available for all upgrades, including loft, cavity wall & interior wall insulation.

For the best results, it is frequently recommended for heat pumps to be installed with solar PV systems (and free grants can cover this too).

We can help check if you are eligible for ECO4, ECO4 Flex & any of the other initiatives in Scotland.

What is an air source heat pump, and how does it work?

An air source heat pump is a heating system that extracts heat from the outside air and uses it to warm your home. It operates by compressing and expanding a refrigerant gas to transfer heat efficiently. We can talk you through this in more detail when we carry out your free home survey.

Are air-source heat pumps suitable for the Scottish climate?

Definitely! Air-source heat pumps are suitable for the Scottish climate. They can operate efficiently in cold weather, making them a reliable heating option. Frequently, even better results can be achieved when used in conjunction with a solar PV system.

What is the ECO4 scheme?

The Energy Company Obligation (ECO4) is the 4th phase of a UK government initiative to address fuel poverty and carbon emissions. Energy companies must implement energy efficiency measures in homes, with flexibility in project selection, funding, and partners.

It began on April 1, 2022, and runs until March 31, 2026. ECO4 targets homes in bands D-G, focusing on comprehensive retrofits to improve the whole house. It mandates upgrades for homes in bands E, F, and G, setting minimum energy efficiency requirements.

These upgrades include insulation, central heating, renewable energy, renewable heating, and district heating connections.

Is the ECO4 scheme available in Scotland?

Yes – the ECO4 scheme is available to every home in Scotland, from the Scottish Borders up to the Highlands & Islands. We help customers in all parts of Scotland gain funding for their energy-saving upgrades.

Which companies can I trust to help with ECO4 upgrades & grants?

Energy companies collaborate with third-party retrofit coordinators and installers to fulfill their ECO obligations. You may even have been contacted directly by these coordinators or installers regarding ECO4 projects.

Since January 1, 2020, the government has mandated that all installers conducting ECO measures must be a Trustmark Registered Business or an equivalent certification. This requirement also applies to ECO4 measures. When approached by a company claiming to be an installer, it’s crucial to verify their credentials. Look for the following certifications to confirm their registration with a consumer protection body:

  1. For most ECO measures, they should be installed by or under the supervision of a TrustMark-registered installer, identifiable by their registration number.
  2. If the installation involves a district heating connection, the installer must be registered with Heat Trust or have equivalent consumer protection measures in place.
  3. Installers should also possess the relevant certification to uphold installation standards for the specific measure types:
    • Most installations require a PAS (Publicly Available Specification) certified installer with a registration number.
    • When dealing with low-carbon microgeneration measures (e.g., renewable heat production), the installer must be MCS (Microgeneration Certification Scheme) accredited and listed on the MCS website.
    • For gas boiler repairs or replacements, the company should be registered with Gas Safe, which can be verified on the Gas Safe website.
    • For oil boiler repairs, installers must be registered with OFTEC (Oil Firing Technical Association), and this can be confirmed on the OFTEC website.

Naturally, we tick all of these boxes, so please fill out the questionnaire below to see if we can help you get a grant.

I am worried rogue traders. Are these grants genuine?

These grants are genuine. The Scottish government has introduced initiatives to reduce fuel poverty & make more homes energy efficient. You can visit their website here if you would like more info – Scottish Energy Grants.

These schemes are not to be confused with so-called “grants” or “funding” to upgrade your windows or bathrooms.
