Internal Wall Insulation Grants Scotland

Free grants & funding for internal wall insulation & room-in-roof insulation in Scotland.

Internal Wall Insulation Grants Scotland

The Energy Company Obligation (ECO4) scheme has made it possible for people in Scotland to get free grants for internal wall insulation in Scotland. This is a great way for older homes, with solid walls, to retain heat & lower energy bills.

Why is this? Government-backed grants have been introduced for a range of energy-efficient home improvements. This includes grants for internal wall insulation, loft insulation & cavity wall insulation. The aim of this is to lower bills & reduce the amount of wasted energy in homes, especially for people living in fuel poverty. As well as lowering energy bills, a properly insulated house also produces less carbon emissions.

The new ECO4 scheme has made these grants available until 2026 for eligible households to carry out improvements to make their homes more energy-efficient.

How can we help? We provide a free service to help Scottish homeowners & private tenants obtain grants & funding for internal wall insulation (and other energy-saving improvements). To date, we have obtained home improvement grants of over £3m for our Scottish customers!

There are different schemes available – free grants, interest-free loans & a combination of grant + loan. This can seem a little daunting, but our team can help establish the most economical way of having your home insulated (and the aim is always to have it done for free).

Please get in touch to ask any questions. Even better, just fill in a few details to check your eligibility & we will call you back.

Why Install Internal Wall Insulation

If your home is made of stone or was built before 1920, it probably has solid walls, which means cavity wall insulation is not an option. Internal wall insulation can be installed by fitting rigid insulation boards to the wall. The other option is to build a stud wall filled in with insulation material such as mineral wool fibre. While this involves a bit of disruption, it is worth considering for a number of reasons. Here are just a few of them…

Lower Energy Bills

Internal wall insulation helps reduce heat loss, especially in older homes. The Energy Saving Trust states that this can reduce bills by up to £620 per year in a detached house.

Increased Property Value

An energy-efficient home with properly insulated walls can increase the value of a property. Well-insulated homes are desirable due to their lower energy costs and improved comfort.

Improved Energy Efficiency

The Energy Saving Trust estimates that a detached house in Scotland will save up to 1500kg of carbon dioxide emissions by installing internal wall insulation.

Government Incentives

Grants such as ECO4, ECO4 Flex & other incentives in Scotland can help offset the upfront costs of having your solid walls insulated, making it an even more attractive investment.

FAQs On Internal Wall Insulation Grants In Scotland:

Can I get a grant for free internal wall insulation in Scotland?

Yes. If you are an eligible homeowner or private tenant in Scotland, you can apply for a free grant for internal wall insulation. However, as the Scottish government is aiming to increase the overall energy efficiency of homes, it is unusual to get a grant for a single improvement. As a result, free grants for internal-wall or room-in-roof insulation are not usually awarded in isolation. However, grants are available for homes installing solar panels & a heat pump at the same time. The good news is that free grants are available for all upgrades.

We can help check if you are eligible for ECO4, ECO4 Flex & any of the other initiatives in Scotland.

What is the ECO4 scheme?

The Energy Company Obligation (ECO4) is the 4th phase of a UK government initiative to address fuel poverty and carbon emissions. Energy companies must implement energy efficiency measures in homes, with flexibility in project selection, funding, and partners.

It began on April 1, 2022, and runs until March 31, 2026. ECO4 targets homes in bands D-G, focusing on comprehensive retrofits to improve the whole house. It mandates upgrades for homes in bands E, F, and G, setting minimum energy efficiency requirements.

These upgrades include insulation, central heating, renewable energy, renewable heating, and district heating connections.

Who is eligible for an ECO4 internal wall insulation grant in Scotland?

Assuming your house has solid walls, and you are either a homeowner or private tenant,  this is the criteria for ECO4 funding in Scotland.

  1. Your house must have an EPC rating of band E, F or G
  2. Someone in your household must be in one of the following benefits:
  • Universal Credit (UC)
  • Housing Benefit
  • Pension Savings Credit
  • Jobseekers Allowance (JSA)
  • Employment & Support Allowance (ESA)
  • Income Support (IS)
  • Pension Credit Guarantee
  • Working Tax Credit (WTC)
  • Child Tax Credits (CTC)
  • Child Benefits

ECO4-Flex is another option in some areas.

Criteria for ECO4 Flex funding:

  1. Your house must have an EPC rating of band D, E, F or G
  2. You tick one of the options below
  • Combined household income is less than £31,000
  • Someone in your household has a severe or long-term health condition that is adversely affected by living in a cold home
  • Your household qualifies for other reasons relating to income and health

Is the ECO4 scheme available in Scotland?

Yes – the ECO4 scheme is available to every home in Scotland, from the Scottish Borders up to the Highlands & Islands. We help customers across the whole Scotland gain funding for their energy-saving upgrades.

Does the ECO4 scheme cover internal wall insulation in Scotland?

Yes. ECO4 grants in Scotland are available for:

  • solar panels
  • air source heat pumps
  • loft insulation
  • cavity wall insulation
  • internal wall insulation
  • room-in-roof insulation
  • new boilers

Normally, grants are awarded to fit internal wall insulation in conjunction with solar panels & air-source heat pumps to help create a more energy-efficient home.

As you would expect, different criteria need to be met for the different grants. Just click here to see if you are eligible by sending us a few details & we will call you back.

Which companies can I trust to help with ECO4 upgrades & grants?

Energy companies collaborate with third-party retrofit coordinators and installers, like us,  to fulfil their ECO obligations. You may even have been contacted directly by these coordinators or installers regarding ECO4 projects.

Since January 1, 2020, the government has mandated that all installers conducting ECO measures must be a Trustmark Registered Business or an equivalent certification. This requirement also applies to ECO4 measures. When approached by a company claiming to be an installer, it’s crucial to verify their credentials. Look for the following certifications to confirm their registration with a consumer protection body:

  1. For most ECO measures, they should be installed by or under the supervision of a TrustMark-registered installer, identifiable by their registration number.
  2. If the installation involves a district heating connection, the installer must be registered with Heat Trust or have equivalent consumer protection measures in place.
  3. Installers should also possess the relevant certification to uphold installation standards for the specific measure types:
    • Most installations require a PAS (Publicly Available Specification) certified installer with a registration number.
    • When dealing with low-carbon microgeneration measures (e.g., renewable heat production), the installer must be MCS (Microgeneration Certification Scheme) accredited and listed on the MCS website.
    • For gas boiler repairs or replacements, the company should be registered with Gas Safe, which can be verified on the Gas Safe website.
    • For oil boiler repairs, installers must be registered with OFTEC (Oil Firing Technical Association), and this can be confirmed on the OFTEC website.

Naturally, we tick all of these boxes, so please fill out the questionnaire below to see if we can help you get a grant.

I am worried about scams. Are these grants genuine?

These grants are genuine. The Scottish government has introduced initiatives to reduce fuel poverty & make more homes energy efficient. You can visit their website here if you would like more info – Scottish Energy Grants.

These schemes are not to be confused with so-called “grants” or “funding” to upgrade your windows or bathrooms.
